Well anyway, I had this annual check up at work and my results were pretty much all good except that my blood sugar is high normal. Grabe, I'm only 24 but already having this kind of lab test result. Being a pharmacist, I know that if I don't start lifestyle modification such as proper diet and exercise, I may soon be taking oral hypoglycaemics like Metformin. Having it in my genes also made it worse. My grandmother died of diabetes complications.
During lunch at work, a colleague mentioned about corn rice. It's supposedly better for your health than white rice which intrigued me a lot. I immediately texted my mom who was able to buy corn rice! But for 70 pesos a kilo which is contrary to others' claim that it's cheaper.
Anyway, from my reading the main benefit of eating corn right is its low glycemic index (GI). The lower a food's GI, the less it affects blood sugar levels and the substance in the body that help cells absorb glucose which is insulin. Also, it hasn't only been associated with a decreased risk for diabetes mellitus but for cardiovascular disease, stroke and certain types of cancer as well.
Other foods low in GI are asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, carrot, apple, banana, tofu, meat and fish.
A good read for pre-diabetics or even those just want to cut back on sugar:
