Except for a slight computer glitch, my enrollment went smoothly. I had a training in Astoria last August 28 so I wasn't able to take an absence from work to enroll. I made it a point though to be online precisely at eight in the morning in order to reserve my desired slots. I picked BusCom and ApMath for my first term. After several tries, I was already furious because the homepage didn't load due to a problem with the server. I used the hotel's wifi and my officemate's smart LTE connection.

I am writing this hours after almost being lured by FinAsia Global into paying over 4k for a discount card which according to my research is a scam. Earlier this morning, I got a phone call while in the office from a certain Ms. Corpuz. She was talking incessantly about how I was chosen to avail of the VIP Platinum Card that when supposedly used in conjunction with your credit card would entitle you to to a 40% discount in whatever airline and hotel you want to book. What enticed me was the one-time fee of P4495 in exchange for lifetime membership! A thing like this was too good to be true and sadly, it was. Looking back, I spotted several inconsistencies during our 5-minute conversation which I unabashedly and blindly ignored. Silly me. One, I am barely a 6 month credit card holder who isn't exactly the best candidate out of millions of people who own a cc. Two, she knew some of my details like the area where I live (she even joked that we live in the same area and named a street in Manila maybe trying to break the ice or something) but she doesn't even know which bank I am connected to. She kept saying BDO instead of BPI. Third, I repeatedly asked for the name of the company but due to her fast speaking pace, I couldn't understand a word she's saying. Obviously that was on purpose because when she was explaining the benefits of getting the card, her manner of speaking was a-ok.
Good thing that after hanging up the phone, my first impulse was to google the words VIP Platinum + Scam and pronto, several websites appeared confirming that it was indeed fake, phony, BS, or whatever-you-wanna-call-it. Lesson learned - paranoia isn't always a bad thing. Spread the news everyone. Stay on guard.
